I have bought a Royal Water Marvello water ionizer which I believe is supplied by the export division of Jupiter. I bought it from ebay at a bargain price because the box had been opened - presumably because a customer changed their mind and returned the item to the supplier.

I must say I am disappointed by the taste of this ionized water as produced by my Marvello water ionizer. I had read so much about how these machines enhance the taste of tap water and how easy it is to consume in large amounts, so I was surprised to discover that not only does it not taste better at the Ph 7 setting, but it leaves an unnatural after taste that is best described as 'chalky'.

A Google search has revealed the fact that a filter that is exhausted will make this 'chalky' taste, so I want to investigate the possibility that filter installed in my Marvello was used when I bought it. That means buying a new filter, installing it and tasting the difference.

Despite the dissapointing results from tasting the water I have seen a chronic tooth infection that had resisited treatment begin to dissapear, so I have decided that it is worth persevering with it.

I would like to hear from other users of water ionizers about their impressions of the taste of this water.

I do have very good soft well water which is a big plus. I have gone through two of the replacement filters and I use the e-cleaner about every 60 days.

The e-cleaner is a cartridge you fill with ascorbic acid powder and run through the machine to soak and clean the electrolysis plates overnight. The machine has a full 5 year warranty and should last 15-20 years with proper care. Even if the plates get too much buildup you can have it professionally deep cleaned by the company for only $35.

I have since discovered that the chalky taste is due to the high calcium carbonate content of my water. Our water hardness is 264 mg/l as CaCO3. I believe that under electrolysis the calcium carbonate is converted into calcium hydroxide which creates the chalky taste. Calcium Hydroxide is also harmful, although I suppose the tiny amount produced in a water ionizer should be nothing to worry about. Nethertheless, I decided that I would prefer the water that enters my machine have reduced calcium carbonate content, so I have installed a carbon filter in the supply to the water ionizer that includes a 10 inch cartridge designed to filter calcium carbonate as well as other nasties.
